Cameras/Mics in the Courts - Information and Resources

In January 2012, the Illinois Supreme Court announced an experimental extended coverage policy in approved Circuit Courts. There are many online resources available to journalists when it comes to cameras and microphones in the Illinois Trial Courts:

-- Supreme Court extended coverage order - rules and requirements (PDF)
-- Latest Supreme Court press releases
-- Information on Circuit Court administration and staff

INBA can also help facilitating meetings with area media representatives, Judges and Court Administrators. Please get in touch if you have any questions or concerns while covering your courts. If you have any questions, or need the INBA's help, e-mail Cameras/Mics in the Courts Committee Chair Jim Grimes or INBA President Laura Trendle Polus.

The Court's policy allows electronic journalists to use video cameras, still cameras, and microphones to record certain proceedings in courts that have received approval to participate in the experiment from the Supreme Court. This comes after decades of effort on the part of INBA and other journalism organizations; however, not all courts in Illinois have asked to participate at this time.

The Status Board, below, will be updated with information as more experimental programs are approved and come online.  It includes information on which courts currently have an approved program (indicated in bold italics), information on contacts for each circuit, and, where established, contact information for media coordinators.  If you know of any updates or changes in your area, contact Jim Grimes, INBA Cameras in the Courts Committee Chair, at: JimGrimes@aol.com.
